This couldn't be more true. Being reminded of this is what helped me write my memoir. I needed to know it was normal for a first draft to be crappy, messy, and cathartic. Now, as I prepare to write my second book, I am reminded how it's okay to not know where I'm headed when I start. It's even okay if what I think is my first draft becomes a in-the-garbage draft. It's all part of the process.
