This is something that has strengthened my writing so much; remembering that not every detail needs to be shared and staying on track with the purpose of the essay. I used to write a lot of cathartic content, without asking, "What value does this story hold for the reader?" Asking myself that question has also changed the way I tell stories. I so appreciate this distinction between memoirs and personal essays. Very useful in understanding where to place specific pieces. Thank you.
